SEND

Welcome to the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) section of West Boldon Primary School’s website. At our school, we are committed to creating an inclusive, supportive, and nurturing environment where every child, regardless of their individual needs or challenges, can thrive. Our approach to SEND is rooted in ensuring that all pupils have equal access to high-quality education and opportunities to succeed.

Our Vision for SEND Provision

At West Boldon, we believe in the unique potential of every child. We understand that children have diverse learning needs, and we aim to provide a range of provisions and strategies to support these needs, ensuring that each child receives the tailored support they deserve. Our goal is to empower every pupil, fostering self-esteem, independence, and confidence, while ensuring they reach their full potential.

A Whole-School Approach to SEND

SEND inclusion is not just the responsibility of the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), but the whole school community. We take a whole-school approach to SEND, where all staff are involved in fostering an inclusive culture and ensuring that the needs of children with SEND are met. Our commitment to inclusion extends beyond the classroom and into every aspect of school life, from extracurricular activities to school trips, ensuring that all children are given equal opportunities to participate and flourish.

Our provision is not one-size-fits-all; we adapt our support to meet the unique needs of each child. This can include:

Individualized Learning Plans: Tailored strategies and objectives designed to help children- One-to-One Support: Working with teaching assistants and support staff for focused, individualized attention.

Access to Specialist Services: We work closely with external professionals, including educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and other specialists, to ensure our pupils receive the expert support they need.

Working in Partnership with Parents and Carers

We understand that parents and carers are the primary advocates for their children. We are committed to building strong, positive partnerships with families to ensure the best outcomes for each child. We encourage regular communication and work together to set and review targets, discuss progress, and share concerns.

We hold regular meetings with parents and carers, including Parent Consultation Evenings and Annual Reviews, and invite families to be actively involved in decision-making regarding their child’s support.

Additional Resource Centre (ARC)

We are very fortunate to have our own Additional Resource Centre (ARC) for those children who need a dedicated, supportive space within our mainsteam primary school. It is designed to provide tailored education and care for children with additional needs.

The unit offers a nurturing environment where children can develop their social, communication, and academic skills, with a focus on individualised learning plans. We understand that every child’s needs are unique, so our approach is flexible, ensuring that all students can thrive at their own pace.

The ARC is a safe space where children can engage in activities such as sensory play, communication games, and group work, helping them build confidence, independence, and social connections. By offering a supportive setting alongside their peers, the unit ensures that all children have equal opportunities to succeed and feel valued within the school community.

We are proud of our inclusive approach and are dedicated to making West Boldon Primary a welcoming place for all learners, where difference is celebrated, and each child’s unique abilities are nurtured.
